I’ve been into skincare since I was 13 and desperate to help my poor adolescent skin rid itself of blemishes and oil. I tried every CVS skincare product for oily skin you could imagine from drying astringent toners to pore strips and cheap charcoal peel off masks. And I’m not going to lie – I bought and religiously used the infamous St.Ives Apricot Scrub. This obviously destroyed my skin and it ended up an irritated, flaky, oily mess. I was so frustrated. Why weren’t these products working for me? What I didn’t understand at the time (besides that the St.Ives apricot scrub is practically evil, and you should probably spend more than $1 on a face mask), is that I actually had combination skin and I needed to find the right products for my skin type.

Discovering your perfect skin all starts with finding the right products and knowing your skin type

Unfortunately, my story isn’t that special. There are a ton of people out there either looking to begin their skincare journey and don’t know where to start, or have already dived in – but not with the right products. I mentioned that I had combination skin, but skin can be dry, oily, or normal as well. Discovering your perfect skin all starts with finding the right products, and finding the right products all starts with knowing your skin type! So, what’s your type? Let’s find out.

What’s Your Type?

Generally speaking, most skincare specialists can categorize skin into one of four skin types – oily, dry, normal, and combination. Let’s explore each of these skin types, and what kinds of products you should look for to help your skin look and feel its best!

Oily Skin – If you have oily skin, your face normally appears shiny and greasy, especially around the T-Zone, which covers the forehead, nose, and chin. Those with oily skin tend to have enlarged pores and are more likely to develop blackheads and other forms of acne.

Best Skincare for Oily Skin – Derms and skincare experts agree that retinol, salicylic acid, hyaluronic acid, and niacinamide are some of the best ingredients you can use to help tackle symptoms of oily skin. If you have oily skin, check out Gourgues Glow’s Papaya Purity, Glow Pads, Bye Bye Blemish Serum, Hyaluronic Hero, Power Couple, Rock ‘N’ Roll Retinol, Superhero Sulfur Mask, and Trifecta Treatment!

Dry Skin – Those with dry skin often have more than one pesky symptom that are tell-tale signs of the condition. If you have chronically or often dry skin, you may recognize these symptoms – skin feeling tight (especially after washing your face), rough texture, scaley or flakey patches, itching, redness, dullness, fine lines and wrinkles.

The key to healing dry skin is to find products that hydrate and moisturize

Best Skincare for Dry Skin – The key to healing dry skin is to find products that both hydrate and moisturize the skin. Hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid add water to the skin, while moisturizing ingredients like glycerin help to lock that hydration in. Those with dry skin may also benefit from ingredients like ceramides, fatty alcohols (cetyl and stearyl alcohol), petrolatum, squalane, and lactic acid. If you have dry skin, check out Gourgues Glow’s Calm Down Cleanser, Cool as a Cucumber CleanserLactic Love Lather, Forever Young Face and Neck, The Bomb, Hyaluronic Hero, Peptide Power Mask, Soothe My Skin Mask, Soothing Skin Tonic, and the Smooth and Sexy Skin Lotion

Normal Skin – If you’re blessed enough to have normal skin, which is skin that isn’t too oily or dry, generally healthy and blemish-free, you’re probably wondering what kind of products you should be reaching for because you’re not necessarily tackling a problem area. Skincare for those with normal skin is all about maintaining skin health and finding balance to keep your glowing complexion.

Best Skincare for Normal Skin – Those with normal skin need to get in front of potential skin problems before they arise by arming the skin with the ingredients like antioxidants and SPF to help combat outside factors such as UV rays and pollution. Additionally, those with normal skin should also be incorporating chemical exfoliants like AHA or BHA to help cell turnover, hyaluronic acid and aloe to help hydrate, moisturize and soothe the skin, and vitamin C to help brighten and protect the skin. Try the Calm Down Cleanser, Lactic Love Lather, Lite as Air Lotion, Wrinkle Warrior By Day Cream, Glow Girl TonicSoothing Skin Tonic, Glow Pads, Forever Young Firming Serum, Save Face Brightening SPF30, Save Face Tinted SPF30Save Face Vitamin C SPF30, and Trifecta Treatment if you have normal skin!

Those with combo skin may notice changes in their complexion as the weather and seasons change

Combination Skin – Combination skin is one of the most challenging skin types to maintain and treat. Combination skin, sometimes called combo skin, includes areas of the face that are oily (usually the T-Zone) and some that are dry or normal (usually the cheeks and jawline). Those with combo skin may notice changes in their complexion as the weather and seasons change, with summer causing the skin to be more oily and acne-prone, while the winter causes dryness.

Best Skincare for Combination Skin – If you have combination skin, it’s all about finding balance and keeping it gentle. In essence, caring for combo skin is helping your skin to gently remove the “bad stuff” (dirt, sebum, excess cells, dry patches, etc.) and giving it the tools it needs to replenish “the good stuff” (moisture, antioxidants, hydration, etc.) So, yes, grab that salicylic acid cleanser to help reduce breakouts and oil in the T-Zone, but remember to replenish your skin with gentle, hydrating ingredients after. Try looking for oil-free cleansers and alcohol-free toners as well. If you have combination skin, try Gourgues Glow’s Papaya Purity, Glow Pads, Calm Down Cleanser, Lactic Love Lather, Bye Bye Blemish Serum, Hyaluronic Hero, Power Couple, Rock ‘N’ Roll Retinol, Forever Young Firming Serum, Illuminate Me Mask, Peptide Power Mask, Power Couple, and Trifecta Treatment!

Remember, your skin is unique to YOU and no one else. So, while we can generalize skin types, it’s important to remember that just like any other organ, your skin is impacted by what YOU do. While products can help your complexion, they are not the only factor in your skincare. Your diet, water intake, medical conditions, stress, hormones, and environment can all have a significant impact on your skin’s health and appearance.

How to Find Your Skin Type

Not sure which skin type you are? No worries! Here are two super simple ways to see what skin type you are:

Blotting paper can help you determine what your skin type is
  1. Blotting Method – Grab some blotting paper from your stash (if you don’t have any, coffee filters work just as well!) start blotting in different parts of the face and examine the sheet against the light. If your paper is mostly dry, you likely have dry skin. If you notice the paper pulling more oil from your T-Zone, but less on the cheeks and jawline, you probably have normal or combination skin. If your sheet is fairly saturated you have oily skin!
  1. Bare Face Method  – Another great way to tell what skin type you have at home, is the “bare face” method. Simply wash your face with a gentle cleanser free of any potential irritants (exfoliants, fragrances, essential oils, etc.) pat dry, and wait for about 30 minutes. Don’t put ANYTHING else on your face – let your skin do what it naturally does. If after half an hour your skin feels tight, especially when smiling or making facial expressions, you probably have dry skin. If you notice grease starting to form on your forehead and nose, you likely have combo skin, while those with oily skin will notice oil forming on the cheeks and chin in addition to the forehead and nose.
